Boards
Creating and naming
A board is the document, it lives inside a workspace, and the only real question is how many you should have.
A board sits inside a workspace, and the workspace is what carries your storage, your credits and your teammates. Press **New board** on the workspace home and an empty canvas opens with nothing to configure first. There is no project setup and no template picker in the way. The board is the document. ## Naming it The name lives in the pill at the top of the canvas. Click it, type, and it commits when you leave the field. Boards start untitled and stay that way until somebody minds, which is fine for an afternoon and expensive after a month. In a workspace of untitled boards the only way to find anything is to open all of them. :::tip[Name it after the question, not the client] "Vase, ceramic directions" beats "Acme Q3", because in four weeks you will be looking for the thing you were exploring rather than the account it was billed to. The client is already in the workspace. ::: ## How many boards More than you think, and the reason is not tidiness. A board is the unit of sharing, the unit of loading, and the unit a teammate can be pointed at, and those three all get worse as a board grows: - **Sharing** a board sends the whole board, so one giant board means sending everything to show anything - **Loading** scales with content, and a board with two thousand assets on it opens slower than one with two hundred - **Pointing** somebody at a section of a board is a paragraph; pointing them at a board is a link Use one board per line of enquiry. When the enquiry splits, split the board. ## When a board is getting too big Signs worth acting on: 1. You navigate it by zooming out and hunting rather than by knowing where things are 2. Two unrelated things are on it, and you would only ever share one of them 3. Frames stopped being enough to organise it The fix is a new board rather than more frames. Content copies across, and the old board stays where it is. :::note[Deleting a board and deleting its assets are different] Deleting a board takes the canvas away. The assets that were on it stay in your library, because other boards may be using them and because you paid to make them. Clearing a library is a separate job, covered in [your storage in one place](/docs/using-plnty/the-asset-library/your-storage-in-one-place/). :::A board sits inside a workspace, and the workspace is what carries your storage, your credits and your teammates.
